51 The winter in Texas has life as for some time past & the cold 'Northers'? up in the Rocky Mountains until next season. The weather altho' warm for an European is delightfully tempered by the refreshing & invigorating Southerly breezes the air becomes pure, the sky clear, & the Starry or Moonlit nights beautiful.

   Owing to the ? state of the country some of the Western settlers have returned to the U. States, awaiting more propitious times.   It must be confessed that for the Planters & industrious farmers it is not agreeable, to be cornered on the one hand by Mexican invasions & on the other by Indian depredations - The Volunteers in the forts are all towards the frontier.   Trade is at a low ebb, & ? still lower - Yet with all this "Texas will go on ahead"

10th The 'San Bernard' one of our Naval vessels D. Crisp - Commander (an Englishman) came in from Vera Cruz. Commander Mons & the rest of the Texan fleet at Yucatan. General ? & the Government are at Houston. Austin is considered for the present too far West for the ? of the ?. A ? Paige sent into Austin.
