49 April. Every ? boat that has come in from N. Orleans brings Volunteers, & unfortunately not having Mexicans to fight with, have commenced fighting amongst themselves - Several serious 'difficulties' have been the consequence - It was then found convenient to allow them to go to Corpus Christi to defend ^if necessary^ that part of the frontier should it be attacked - 7th - To day there was a "Battalion Inspection" in Galveston composed of the 'Fusiliers, 'Coast Guards', 'Galveston Guards', &'Artillery' We had marching & countermanding ^to our hearts content^ being reviewed by the Lieut. Col. Commanding. This Gentleman, is Captain of one of the Houston Steam Boats, the blue jacket was replaced by a fine uniform coat & Epaulettes, mounted on his charger - he made a speech thanking us for our discipline & service; at the termination of which, there was nearly a dead silence. At this a friend of his stepped up to him & whispered something in his ear - The Lieut. Col. advanced nearly to the center of the column saying "Gentlemen I shall be happy to take a drink with you all as Shaw's Hotel (which was opposite).. Three cheers followed
