  Arriving at Houston  I paid my respects to the President  X  & my attention was called to the meeting of Congress & from what I had heard of such assemblies in Texas I was prepared to see a Bear Garden - This was not the case, but an ? a meeting - more than could have been expected considering the ? elements that were at work - Each party however had it bould speakers - & it was not doubted but that the War party would pass their Bill for the invasion of Mexico - still Houston held the positive power to Veto it or not -

X who I found in a ? room, ? with papers and dictating to two Secretaries. Amongst the conversations he e___d the Volunteers, who to get them out of the way he had allowed to go down the coast - & was fearful that they would bring in a fight on the frontier & then if they were all killed, why then he should be blamed for it -
