15 of prairie on fire which looked strangely terrific. When gusts of wind fanned the burning grass, the land was one mass of fire, where huge black columns of smoke rose & rolled about above the flames & it did not require any very particular stretch of imagination to picture a large city on fire. Many distressing tales are told of travellers horses & cattle being surround & burnt by the Prairie fires.
