When Mexico separated from Old Spain, her military rulers declared the negroes free. The Spaniards being the principal possessors of slaves had to give them up without any compensation. Declaring the negro free gave the Mexicans in the eyes of the United States & England a humane character, and contributed in a great measure to her recognition. Some of the liberated negroes were dragged in chains to the army, whilst others left their old masters & their homes, wandering about in idleness, until forced by starvation to apply for work.
