The Ojibway. although they use the gun. of the white man and use the [?] of the indian races to have them. never [?] the gun with any care at. all. Their guns are however the muzzel loaders and as a means to measure the powder they empeyed [sic] a piece of horn. the end of a cows horn was cut off and a hole drilled in it. to fasten it by a thong to the person. With this the powder was measured out and the gun loaded. A horn similar to this except that the hole was drilled from the tip into the cavity of the horn. was used to draw blood.
The wars of the indians are very different affairs from the wars of the white men. The whites are drawn up in line and fight to a finish. The indian in small bands or parties delights in surprise and ambuscade. They lie in wait and surprise their enemy rush upon them in a sleeping camp or other unguarded place kill and take what scalps they can and then as hastily retreat. It makes no difference how old or young enemy may be. a child killed counts as much as an adult. A great battle was fought at one time between the Dakota and Ojibway on the Mississippi river. lasting it is said for ten days and there was as we [?] it but two or three killed. the fighting was done from behind the trees. a warrior would peer round a tree and watch for an enemy to show himself then he would shoot an arrow at him. When an opposing force saw they had the advantage in number or advantages [?] they were very courageous. Among the Ojibway. when a chief was organizing a war party. or wanted a confederation of the family for a war he sent by a runner his War Club. tobacco and wampum.." inviting them to a council.
