It was he who was captured as he was acting as a runner and hurrying into Canada to Join Sitting Bull. and quit the Northern and Southern bands in an onslaught on the whites. At the time of his capture. if we remember correctly he wore a "War Bonnet" made entirely of strips of the hide of a white poney. that had died one of which the chief was very fond. This bonnet was in the collection of Lieutenant Cooke. and in our former volume we gave a drawing of it. but the data being improcurable is omitted in this volume. The War bonnet is a skull cap made of blanket or other material. that may be tied on the head by a string or strings passed under the chin. on the forehead is a band of beads and at the end of this band is a bunch of Ermine skin tassles. and ribon and silk strips.. encircling the cap is a crown of the feathers of the War Eagle. the end of which is tipped with a small whisp of colored horse hair.. The feathers are secured by sewing. the quill to the cap and [?] the shaft. with bright colored cloth. usually a red blanket. They made some depredations and in a [?rally?] fired upon them one of the number was killed. that for the indian destroyed their faith in the war. bonnet and the party returned crestfallen and "Big Bow" sold his bonnet to Captain Ives. It is a very eligant [sic] specimen and wonderfully well preserved. The cap is of red blanket. the forehead strip is of white beads. with angular patches of red and blue beads on a field of white. and pendant from the cap in front of the ear. is on either side pendants of ermine fur. and a strip of [?] to tie the bonnet on. the head. From the summit of the cap arises a pom pom. made by tying with sinew. two down feathers upon the end of a long quill of a feather denuded of the feather or down. this is maintained erect by four [?] sewed to the crown of the
