On the summit of the staff is a [?] "Shining Feather" is a ['?cross?'] so far as he has any white man's faith.
The Ojibway medecine [sic] man keep the most sacred of his Medecine in a pouch made of a bear skin and the articles are pushed way down in the claws. so that they cannot be found even should the skin be discovered. It is believed that should the medecine be seen and handled by the uninitiated it would lose its virtue. hence it is guarded most carefully. To obtain the service of the Medecine man the relatives of the sick send him a present of calico shirts. or any other thing and tobacco. these things they present to him at his residence and he then goes into a trance or dream and in this dream. the Manito reveals to him what the disease is and what he should do. and also indicates the proper presents. that should be given him. to cure the malady. If the right presents are offered he can cure the disease. if not. he may not be able to. He then procedes to the sick man's house and [?] the rattle and drums and all things being equal - [?] and the disease. Bad Medecine Men. among the Ojibway are found a class of men known as Bad Medecine Men. these are such as have communication with the Bad Spirit and are possessed of secret medecines and subtile influences which they can at will exert to the harm and even death of an indian they are called.. "Na ni za no zi". "dangerous." and are very much feared by the laety [sic] at large. If an indian has a [?] against one of his tribe. or if he is disappointed in love he repairs to the "Na ni za no zi" to procure the means. whether medecine or a charm that will remedy the evil and if necessary kill the aggressor These are the men who are carried by the evil one through the air at night in [?fire?] as we have narrated in the Folk Lore story of "Indian [?] in fire." They are the only ones who can make the "Ji sa kow" "Grand Medecine." of which we will speak further on We saw one of them
