197 "Maniiboju Catching Ducks."
One time while Manibojou was living quietly alone. he felt very hungry. There were plenty of ducks of all kinds on the lake near by but he did not know how to get them At last he hit upon a plan. so he went to the woods and got a lot of [?Bannerd?] bark a whole sack full. and cumming to the Lake. where the ducks were he commenced to walk on the beach or shore singing to himself. When the ducks saw that they were very anxious to know what their brother was about and calling to him asked him. But Manibojou appeared to be very much interested and did not hear them. they continued to call and at last he pretended to be very much troubled. and answered them in an angry voice. and told them that they were annoying him ver much and at last told them he was going to have a dance and so they all agreed to go with their elder brother "Manibojou" and have a good time So they went and built a large wigwam. and Manibojou commenced to sing the ducks commenced to dance. Manibojou advised them to dance with their eyes closed. then he commenced to kill some. but when he would choke one they would squak or quack. so that they should not know what he was doing. at last one of the little ducks. known as the "Hell diver".. opens his eyes when he saw Manibojou in the act of breaking his brother ducks neck. and he commenced to holla and tell that Manibojou was killing them. then the ducks began to fly away. and Manibojou Jumped in among them kicking and killing what he could. before they got away Maniboujou became very angry because of the action of one of his younger brothers - "he was the oldest of creation' - for telling on him so while Manibojou was kicking them out "in the hopes of killing more" he kicked the helldiver. on the back which left a mark for his curse., and that species of duck has a white spot on the back where Maniboujou kicked him when he [?] him out of the wigwam and he also gave this duck the red eye lid which they have to this day. in a punishment for looking at him while he was killing the others.
