In recent times the Dakota at the Lower Brule Agency and elsewhere have constructed from calf skin a flat pouch for carrying odd and ends. money and so forth. it is thirteen and a quarter inches long. and about eight wide. a piece of calf skin is folded and a flap left at one edge when the rest of the three edges are sewed together with sinew and ornamented with a line of blue. yellow & black beads. The side are adorned with angular patches of blue, red, and yellow, beads. The corner being finished with tassles of buckskin strips and tin cones carrying horse hair dyed red. the flap is tied with a thong of buckskin. and a second thong at the back furnishes the means of securing the pouch to the person.
The Dakota pouch from the Stobie collection is a good type of article was at Pine Ridge South Dakota. In general construction it is like the other specimen except that the upper edge is freely open from end to end. and the upper margin is punched at either end with a loop to secure it. to a ponies' saddle. or it is used with as a saddle bag. except that it is not double. The ends are richly adorned with white, dark blue, red, and olive green beads and the same coloring is found on the flap. At the end of each line of beads of the dark blue color is a couplet of tin cones carrying horse hair dyed yellow. In this case we presume although we do not know as a matter of fact that the horse hair for this pouch is some taken from the helmets of the United States cavalry killed in battle as this peculiar color is that of the army helmet. The lower edge is finished with a tassle of buckskin strips. In the centre are twelve strips wrought in porcupine quills. dyed red, yellow
