We have shown that the food of the Dakotas as well as that of his enemy the Ojibway was cooked. After this it is taken [crossed out: conveyed] by each individual indian to him or her self in a dish of some kind. [?] made of horn others of wood and in recent degenerate times the dish of civilization has been adopted. Among the horn dishes we found one which was the property of "Kicking Bear." The indian "Kicking Bear" was the leader of the Dakota indians in their [?] and attack upon the United States troops in A.D. 1890 at 'Pine Ridge' "Wounded Knee" and other places in South Dakota. "Sitting Bull" was the leading spirit and always turbulent when he was killed "Kicking Bear" became the head chief. He was with the hostiles captured and sent to Fort Sheridan Illinois and then allowed to accompany "Buffalo Bill" to Europe. He sarted on this trip in the dress he came from the plains in. Beads feathers & other things. When he returned the "Horn dish" of which we give this drawing is the only thing about him truly indian and belonging to the old days. He carried trunks of "white man's clothes" This dish is made from the horn of the "Big Horn Sheep" or "Rocky Mountain Sheep." "Ovis Montana" C. In this dish "Kicking Bear" received his food. It is worked out of a piece of horn and is so hard that it is with impunity put upon a stone and meats and other things [?ladled?] in it.

Spoons among the natives are matters of rare occurrence and we believe that till they saw the whites they did not posses any now however they do use them. Those of domestic manufacture are of horn. In the collection of Dr. Adams is one owned by "Solomen Yellow Hawk" a Dakota. This is cut from a piece of beef horn and is ornamented at the handle with dyed quills and a head cut upon the horn. The neck bent the head represents that of a duck.
