 So:  Be it remembered that on this seventeenth day of August in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred & forty three before me the undersigned Clerk of the St Louis Court of Common Pleas within & for said County  Came Pierre Chouteau Jr. to me personally known to be a member of the firm of P Chouteau Jr & Company and who in my presence signed & executed the forgoing Instrument of writing in the name of said P Chouteau Jr & Co. And the said Pierre Chouteau Jr. acknowledged the same to be the act & deed of said P Chauteau Jr & Co for the purposes therein mentioned.
  In Testimony whereof I have herein to set my hand and affix the seal of said Court
  at Office in the City of St Louis this seventeenth day of August eighteen hundred & forty three.
