178 resignation of Isaac. He voluntarily submitted to be slain. While Abraham drew the knife to plunge it into the bowels of his beloved Son, he loved him as his own soul & no doubt would most willingly have died in his stead. That Isaac was most freely cont.g as is evident from the circumstances of his age & strength, also was able to carry up upon the Mountain, wood sufficient to continue a sacrifice & Abraham being aged & they two alone, he could have been no doubt easily resisted by his son. This is a most marvellous instance of faith & submission to God, both in the father & the son on sacred record. The most high giving to them thereby a lively representation, of the father offering up his J X well beloved son, our Saviour as a sacrifice for the Sins of the World, when he commanded his sword, to awake against the man of his right hand: & the Son freely offered himself to die for us. In this type Abraham represents, God the father, & Isaac, the Son, our Lord J.X. Isaac in consent.g to have his life taken away, did it in Obedience to God; & Abraham in consent.g, so far from any murderous intention was influenced by the purest principles of obedience to God whose right to command any actions no creature can dispute, & at the same time activated by the tenderest love to his only Son. God is the absolute proprietor of the lives of his creatures & may consistantly with his goodness & justice make us of one take away the life of another, as he uses any natural means or second causes, to bring to a period our lives.
