150 Thus did that wise man Moses, whose youth was formed on the principles of religion, the only true & solid wisdom, Exodus 18. So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law Jethro, & did all that he had said. For his council was wise & the son found much comfort & advantage in follow.g the council of his wiser parent.
3. It is the duty of children to submit to the reproofs & corrections of their parents. They are to consider that the task is painful to the affectionate parent, & that their good & benefit is the motive & the measure of all reproofs & corrections. We have had fathers of the flesh, we? corrected us & we did them reverence. 4. It is the duty of children to obey all the lawful commands of parents. As parents are supposed to be wiser than their children, they are better qualified to direct them, than they are themselves; and as children are dependent on their parents, they have a right to command their obedience. And this law of nature is enforced by the precepts of christianity. Col. 3.20. Children obey your parents in all things; for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Then filial obedience is implicitly due from children, while they continue, under the government of parents, whether they command them to perform this or the other labor or service, study or employment, they are to go & come at the parents' biding. Filial obedience to all the commands of parents, is to be understood with the restriction of things lawful. Children are not to obey if parents command them to do things, sinful or criminal, as to steal, to lie to swear.
