we has a letter from Charles & Isaac a day or two since - will send C's & would Isaac's bit it would be double postage

I think I will take off half the sheet and send it there is not much in the other half only he says Charles very deliberately & understandingly made up his mind that he was doing best to stay here - the advantages were greater than the disadvantages he concluded to stay and wisely sticks to it till he sees some cause to decide differently. He says he feels very bad when he thinks of home & the children but that he tells him to think of going to California or to Sea. And Charles acknowledges that even that is a great deal better than having no wife & children - says his own health is excellent even the drawth of this summer which is very extraordinary does not affect him - that he has to ride in the dust by day & by night but Charles works in the shade where he is not expos'd at all - he speaks of C's talking about coming home & going back I should not think that would be hardly worth while as it would be more likely to give him the ague - but let us believe that it will all be right and best and trust it there and not feel anxious about it

[left-hand side] if you can read this letter you'll do pretty well [upside down within letter] Maria is very smart says she could go down and about her work as well as any body but means to keep her room a fortnight for fashion's sake the baby's "Energine" is its name is well & they are very happy

Poor Josie I'm sorry he is sick tis ruinous to the constitution to take medicine especially Catonics I am afraid he eats green apples & things that are hurtful to him I would try to get along with care and diet and not give much medicine

no matter about the Eggs perhaps you had better tell them & put up some more for Lucy when the weather is colder I feel how much you want to see Charles I pray for you and cry too -- but I feel afraid to have him come just as cold weather commences & if he come I suppose he will go right back again. Antoinette expects Isaac will get through by January or Feb. but I suppose nobody knows when
