Mother April 8th 1848 Fearful risk Anxiety [drawing of face with large eyes]

[top upside down] let me know whether that letter was lost with that V it contained

[right-hand side] I didn't consider of it at the time as I am apt to do. But it was rather a foolish idea your carrying away so many Books prompted by vanity I fear- you certainly have access to as many Books as you can read to say nothing of periodicals Charles has begun to read Upham and felt somewhat hurt about it when he found t'was gone we have no meetings you know and the Sabbaths are long he read Smellie and another the title of which I dont remember he was interested in them very much he reads loud cheifly you know he didn't use to for Albina's improvement perhaps but she dont seem to enjoy it the fact is you do now undervalue your Brother Charles - tis a greif of heart to me. You will set a higher estimate on his character some day or other if you do your duty

[bottom of page upside down] Albina has been quite undetermined about getting a carpet because she thinks there are other things she wants more But at last Friday morning concluded to send her order & wishes you get the money if you can and get her as good one as you can for the money if you cannot get a decent one for that I would advise that you spend a dollar or so more but she has laid only the ten she dont know just where Mr. C. Kittredge lives but Mrs. Marshall will tell you she is a relative of his get Ann to go with you to purchase the Carpet and have it ready to send up by Samuel besure.
