the family came home. A splendid Wedding and splendid party to escort the bride to her new home. Maria is teaching school. Uncle & Aunt all alone this Winter. Folks there well as usual. Mr. Stevens, Shoemaker died here last week, which makes the twentieth death in town since last March. Is not that a great many for the No. of inhabitants? Mr. White is very low, in Consumption. It has been quite sickly in town, though no prevailing epidemic. Mrs. Mescovey, Mr. Stineford & Widow Stanchfield have died quite recently. Mrs. Stineford has requested assistance from the town; and her great lazy boys one of them as old as Ar. Hill was when his father died, smoke their pipes in the corner! You know last Winter there were two Temperance Societies organised in town; a Washingtonian, and an "old Temperance Soc." The meetings of both were suspended through the Summer, but we have now regular meetings of our Society, i.e. the Temperance Band, once a month, & adjoined meetings between. The Washingtonians also meet frequently. We have had several Addresses & shall probably have more. Ezra Barker "held forth" New Years eve, a lawyer Bunchard from N.Y. Major Furber &c. other evenings. Mr. Snow is to be invited to give us an address, I believe. There has been but one violation of the pledge in our Soc. during the year, but some of the members in the other, backslide & repent almost continually. I don't know as I have fervent charity enough, but really I do dislike the Washingtonian principle, as inculcated by Dockham and carried out in this town. The "Sons of Temperance" are about organizing in this town. I don't hardly want Charles to join; thereby becoming, not only a S.O.T. but a brother to
