Dear Brother - I begin to write this early as I have very little leisure & I fear that if I should not begin till Oct. 15th it would be very late in the day before I could get my epistle ready to launch. I will begin like a bear in November & end (if convenient) like a lamb in May. I want to join you because you will always direct your letters to I.M. Metcalf, instead of J.M. Metcalf. In consequence of your bein so nasty, your last letter per N. Hobbs had quite an extensive circulation. It was so fixt that Mr. Mitchell thought it was for him (I dont know how he happened to get it), it was directed I. instead of J. M. Metcalf & the Metcalf was not written very plain so it was taken to stand for Ichabod M. Mitchell. Well - after it had been there a good while they sent it along as far as to Mr. Hill's, and they did not tell if it nor send it down for a good whole (not having all read it I presume). However antiquated its contents were they were not stale I assure you. Quere; What did Messrs Hill & Mr. Schell with their families make of such clauses as "omnes & infaudrum dictu? Plaugue on the tailor for making your coat so small. I did not attend master this year. We have dug about 100 bushels of whites and part of the early potatoes. The potatoes turn out very slim which I beleive is a general complaint. We have got in all the turnips, beans, pumpkins, squashes, etc. etc. We have threshed one bushel of wheat, got it ground, and eat it about all up. Charles has obtained 1 bushel of wheat of A Mr. Stanchfield in payment or part payment of a debt, & bought a bushel and a half of the miller besides. We have threshed the Buckwheat. A Mr. Stanchfield of & from Buck-sport has bought Oliver Davis' farm and moved in last week. He had our waggon to go to Buck-sport. Mr. Col. J. Lee Esq. has it now to go to Bangor. 10th Eve. Today we rec'd a good letter from you per aunt henry via Mary Stubbs who received it of a Porter I believe and that is all I know about it. As for your a wants they will be attended to as fast as possible - you may have my great thick warm woolen comforter to keep your neck warm. Mother is knitting
