Mr Horn being unwell I took his guard hours from 7 till 9 1/2 oclock = I went out alone & without even a pistol & the mules some distance from our camp = when my time had nearly expired, I saw a dark object creeping towards me (or the animals) I thought it was an Indian at first, & regretted my being without arms = it came up within a rod or two of me when I saw that it was a large wolf = it had not discovered me = ^ as I had stood perfectly still = & as I sprang towards it = it jumped away = very much frightened at finding unexpected company , so near = Thurs? Sept 6 started early - travelled through sage bushes & dust as usual, passed ^ Govt trains with supplies ^ for Fort [Hall?]] going east as well as west = & some men with packs on their own backs = on foot = trudging on for life = their animals probably having given out = travelled about 15 miles & nooned on poor grass = day warm as usual = nights comfortable = Travelled in the afternoon 10 or 12 miles = passed some emigrants whose cattle had been stolen by the Indians = they tracked them to an Indian villiage * as they did not find the cattle took a horse away from one of the Indians when a large body of Indians appeared & fired on them = when they retreated = two of their men who had seperated were not seen afterwards = night before last some emigrants saw Indians prowling around like wolves dressed in their skins ^ camped on good grass = 7th last night some waggoners camped near us had three horses stolen by 5 Indians near morning they were discovered & the animals recovered = but the Indians escaped = one party we passed ^ today had lost cattle & one ox had over 20 arrows sticking in him = they were extracted, & the ox recovered = camped about sundown grass poor = one of our guard thought he saw Indians prowling around our camp = but as a good watch was kept = they did us no harm = Made this day 25 miles = 8th Sat started very early = our animals look poor = my mules backs are quite sore I walk as much as I can to save them,, as we pass emigrants we hear daily of Indian depredations = many
