With snow clad peaks around us "alps upon Alps" with many singular rocks & frowning precipices. Saw today the service berry - sweet - resembling somewhat the thimble berry, or June berry camped on a small stream of clear cold water, saw a few antelope through the day = on guard from 8 to 10 oclock, July 11th raised camp about 7 Oclock crossed from one small stream to another, over very steep hills, & had to lead our animals up & down, saw a good many scattered Elks horns = & some beautiful flowers, one of a very bright red color with the calyx covered with white down or wool, & the flower looked very pretty in its downy stem, at our noon camp on a pretty mountain stream, saw and old duck with a number of young ones, saw one Buffalo in the distance, & in the afternoon passed over some high hills,, through groves of Pine & Cottonwood, a pleasant sight after travelling through such a treeless country, we descended into a broad valley & saw torn page hills on the (south East) or opposite side, saw a good torn page
