while looking through my glass I saw a solitary horseman in the distance riding towards me as soon as he discovered me. I saw him stop & reconoitre? me with his glass, I rode slowly towards him when he turned & rode back as if afraid. I stopped then he stopped & looked at me again, & as I rode towards him he made off. I then stopped dismounted & let my horse graze to show him I was not pursuing him, but waiting, he slowly ventured towards me until he could make out what I was with his glass & then rode up, it proved to be Mr Brown, he said I had given him quite a scare,, as he thought he was the only man that had left camp in this direction, & he supposed of course I was an Indian, we rode leisurely along stopping occasionaly for our horses to graze & watching for the train to make its appearance Mr Brown after looking through his glass was quite positive he saw them on a distant ridge some miles to the East, I looked with my glass in that direction at the dark line of objects but could not make out that then changed their position in the least & suggested that perhaps it was only bushes but he was confident & we were going to ride in that direction when we saw the head of the train appear in sight in an opposite direction & perhaps saved me from missing them & losing them altogether,, we rode on then parralell to & keeping the train in sight, they scared Antelope out of the Valley towards us Mr Brown being some 20 rods in the rear of me & nearer the Antelope dismounted and prepared to fire at the antelope which had stopped some 40 rods from him & stood gazing at him. before he could fire however the antelope ran some 20 rods farther torn page him & stopped again . he judging the distance too great
