back of the ribs. one of our men succeeded in killing one & other were wounded. we did not find water & was obliged to travel late in the night about 10 Oclock, the night was cold as usual, the cold air settling in the valley from the snow clad peaks, but the moon & stars shone bright & lighted us on our way through the narrow valleys & over the ridges,, some mules gave out & quite a number of men & mules did not come in till next morning at last going down? a steep rocky hill by a narrow winding path probably made by wild animals we found water in the valley below 2nd did not move today waiting for the stragglers of the night to find their way in, they would have to follow our trail, I went out with Mr Miller in search of game rode along the base of the mountains, but did not see any game, at noon while my horse was grazing I went among some sheltering pines made a writing table of a large rock & wrote up my journal to this date, there is considerable pine in patches along the sides of the mountains & in seperate groves. My search for game in the afternoon was not more successful & I came back to camp without any. 3rd arose as soon as I could see, made a hasty breakfast, saddled my horse,, & having ascertained the direction the guide intended taking. sallied out I rode up a small creek a number of miles without seeing any game the morning was cool & pleasant I came to a nice patch of grass & stopped & let my pony graze, thinking I had better wait here till the train came in sight. after waiting sometime & the train not appearing I rode upon a high ridge to obtain a better view of the surrounding country Thinking perhaps the train had passed or taken some other torn page
