large pile of stones on the point of a ridge with a pair of elk horns places on the heap probably raised by the Indians in commemoration of some important event, returned to camp unsuccessful not seeing any game 22nd left camp early passed a good many emigrants passed three or four small streams of tolerable good water & timber, saw many skeletons of cattle that had died along the road last year probably belonged to the government, saw another wolf but did not succeed in getting a shot they are very shy encamped near a small stream with some timber. timber mostly Elms - Oaks etc saw near camp - prairie hen - Wild Onions - Indigo plant & a little bush resembling Honey locust = on our road today we saw many small patches of timber scattered around on the prairie & crossed a good many hollows where we found generally pools of water & the crossing difficult on account of the depth of the mud, in crossing one place one of the riding mules mired? the rider ^ Dr Briggs hit him with his whip, the mule sprang forward from under the rider & left him knee deep in mud ^ & with his hat now? stuck full of prairie flowers presented a comical sight We had some wild onions for supper, with fried bacon crackers & rice, we all laid down on our tent cloth, as the sky was clear & about 12 oclock was awakened by rain falling in my face we had quite a hard thunder shower
