torn page horse "Paupaw" (an Indian Poney) having torn page brought back for me, by one of the torn page , it was a pleasant morning & we torn page adieu to our old camping ground & turning torn page backs upon the civilized world & its comforts, we started at a brisk pace to join our comrades ' after riding about four miles we came to their camp on the Little Blue River found them packing preparing to start we stopped to assist in packing & all started from here, in company, we soon struck the open prairie , they are not as level as I expected to see being more or less made up of ridges & valleys, with neither tree or shrub, & at this season of the year these endless plains of green look beautiful, the color being often changed by thousands of flowers, (as one or another species predominates.) to yellow, orange, Blue or crimson, we travelled from this camp about 15 miles to Harts Grove & encamped I stopped at a log house to get a last bowl of bread & milk, & did not reach camp till after dark, our mules gave us considerable trouble during the day, the packs would frequently turn & frighten the mules, when they would run & kick & scatter their packs over the prairies, & often in their fright, charge through our train and frighten 2 or three more, & we were all day fixing
