60 Monday May 5th

Arrived in Pittsburgh at 5 oclock and found it truly the "iron City" - Smoky, dingy, and black I did not like the looks of it at all --so at 7 o'clock I took the Cars for Philadelphia - the Penn Central rail road passes through all kinds of country creeping along the river so crooked that a Snake would break his back trying to follow it - where it crosses the Mountains there is a Tunnel 4000 feet long which is as dark as the darkest night after it passed through the tunnel it runs down a grade of 95 feet to the mile for several miles it looks rather "[?Fokerish?]" to ride on the side of the mountain where you can look down from 500 to 1500 feet, in some places almost perpendicular - we got into Philadelphia at 3 o'clock A.M. and I went to the Girard House and retired - 360 miles from Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh is 500 miles from Cincinnati by river

Tuesday May 6th

Arose at 7 oclock and proceeded to exploring the city of "Brotherly Love" - called on Mr Lincoln at the store where he works - then went the the House and saw all of his family that live at home except George who was at the store where he works - found Mr L's folks all well as usual and had a very pleasant call - after dinner went to call on George at the store but did not find him in - went out to Girard College which is a magnificent building - I then walked the principal streets until tea time - as I was going to the Hotel who should I meet but Geo P Metcalf who is with Capt Partridge at the American - they are going home in the morning so that I shall have company the rest of the way home - Philadelphia is the finest city I have seen yet - the Streets are straight and the sidewalks wide - and then there are some of the most magnificent buildings Public, and Private, - and the dwellings in some of he Streets are splendid - indeed were I to have my choice where to live I should prefer Philadelphia to any city that I have been in yet - and I shall have a desire to come again at some future time, and finish looking around as I am too tired to enjoy it very much more -
