58 important railroad lines - I should think from what I could see of it in half an hour rather an important point - at 6 Oclock we reached Cincinnati - and I quartered at the Woodruff House a very good $1.50 house where I got a good bed and enjoyed a good nights rest -

Friday May 2d

After breakfast I went to [?Prys?] Garden a high point I should think [?300?] feet above the river - from here a splendid view is obtained of the City, River, and Covington on the Kentucky side - a pleasing sight - I then took a walk of 2 or 3 hours around the principal streets - then went down and took a berth on board the Alleghany for Pittsburgh to make a variety between railroad and Steamboat travelling which makes it much easier - Cincinnati can boast of some splendid building, Churches, Public Buildings, dwellings &c which will compare very favorably with any I have seen West - I noticed a curious motto on quite an ancient looking Church "Glory to God in the highest and in Earth Peace to men of good will" - there is an immense iron business done here which gives the city a sort of dingy, black appearance, but the greatest fault which I find with this and other cities out this way is a want of cleanliness - all the rubbish and filth is left lying in the streets - and Hogs, Fowls, dogs and cats are free to run about where they choose - this is contrary to the laws of health which should be considered of the greatest moment in such densely populated cities - Cincinnati has a large share of the poorer classes who inhabit the dirtiest and filthiest parts of the city - and who live less comfortably than the Brutes in New England - why it is that so many poor people crowd into cities I cannot see - especially when there are such opportunities offered for settling the lands still farther west where they could live in ease. and comfort but "Such is life" - at 12 oclock we left the wharf and went as the saying is "Sailing up to O-hi-o" - the scenery up the Ohio is far ahead of what I saw on the Missisippi [sic] the bluffs are not so abrupt and less rocky
