54 He pointed me across the street - just opposite to him And there I found friend Adams and his Son in "right good trim" They've put me through since I've been here - my visit I've enjoyed. To them I e'er shall grateful be - for time which they've employed In introducing me around - to friends both good and true Acquaintances that I have formed - that are not few, but new. I'll briefly now describe to you the far famed Burlington For full particulars you must wait - Till I've arrives at home Tis situated in two States - though queer to you may seem While Noble "Mrs Syppy" rolls onward just between - East Burlington in Illinois - so the good people say And city proper on the west - in the state of I-ow-a - It is a goodly city, for business I should think - At least for those who are inclined, at trick of trade to "wink" The aim of men here seems to be the gathering up of gold To feelings of their customers - they are I think quite cold. The country folks they most do Jew - or else I am no Judge. They pile the price in mountain high - and say to conscience "Fudge" The people are a mixture of Irish, Scotch, and Dutch With Yankees just enough, to hold the reins within their clutch Though at the last Election here - the Dutchies joined with Rum "Dunder und blixen" - "Shure" they did - they give the Yankees "Some" School Houses here and churches too - abound in great profusion And Sects and parties (matter of course) exist in great confusion, Society here if I can judge - is from perfection far. If Ladies were more plenty - I should think 'twould be at par. For where you go if Ladies are - (a thought 'tis most profound) Their virtue will triumphant reign - and grace will much abound, But after all it is a place where I with good intent - Could spend my days in virtue's ways - be happy and content. Although with kindred friends at home I much desire to dwell My hearts affections to them all - are bound by magic spell. And should my health permit me too enjoy my home again The time and money I have spent will not be spent in vain. And now kind friend I'll stop my pen - and finish up my letter (I beg you will excuse me for not writing something better) With kind regards to all my friends - my prayers for them are fervent I now remain as e'er before Your most obedient Servant
