2. received a reply to a letter he wrote to Jack. Opr watched the R.R. track from South Aurora to New York unclear until after 1 A.M. but did not see any of the strikers around. Thursday, Aug 16th 1888 Today in Aurora Opr went out with Tom Hornly who was under the influence of liquor, & he said he wanted to see Van Race, who he (T.H.) had heard had got some citizens on the west side to go to Mr Rhodes in his (V.R's) behalf for work. J.H. called him a - - - - and said he (V.R) had been trying to run the west side unclear since the time they took the vote in the Hall. Van Race has been trying to persuade the strikers on the west side to go back on the road. When Tom and Opr walked along River St. they saw Van Race coming toward them and just before meeting them he went into a store and T.H. said, "Did you see the ---- trying not see us, now stop and see him come out" they did, and Van Race came out but walked in another direction, & T.H. & Opr went into Seibert's? Saloon and from there to unclear O'Neil's Saloon in the N.W. Hotel and O'Neil said to T.H. what old man Smith bad been down to see him (T.H.) and had left word as to where he could meet him and
