Dear Mother We had beef soup for dinner to day made after your own heart and we wished very much we could hand you a good large dish of it for it was superb - there is plenty more for two dinners: also we have just finished our supper of hasty pudding which unfortunately did not get quite sufficiently done but the remnant (no trifling quantity) we intend to fry for breakfast during the ensuing week:- We received yours yesterday - the same day suppose gave one from myself and Lucy reached you containing all the new we could gather. We all mourn much about that sad accident of the colt and are very anxious to hear further, I should not think he could live - I don't believe it is best for Charles to go teaming in the woods this winter: it will be too hard for him, he has so much to do at home in the cold punishing weather. Have you all got ready for winter? Has Albina finished her sewing mostly? Have you been to see Almeda more than once? We have just received a letter from her: she writes as if she was contented but says nothing about the children she proposes to make some elder applesauce for Lucy which she will be glad of. I fancy from her description of the school that her children will have rather a slim chance of schooling the coming winter.
