[written upside down across the top] How do Isaac and Mayo get along? Isaac is as old not as Father was when he began [body of letter] meeting as they call it of Mr. Tenney's Bible Class as the Free Church he (Mr Tenney) has a class of more than 30 females, 11 or 12 of whom have been hopefully converted during the year; they, together with a male bible class, have meeting once in a while for social, free religious conversation the object being, to become acquainted, & to converse with the impenitent members of the class. I have attended several of these meetings and have found them interesting & improving. I distribute tracts to about 20 families every month & attend a female prayer meeting every Saturday afternoon so you see I have not a great deal of leisure. I went to Lowell last summer in vacation, & was much pleased with my visit; Mrs. M. has a beautiful boy, looks much like Caleb, Isaac is really a fine enterprising young man, & Enoch strives to be all he can; Caleb was in town a few weeks ago, but I scarcely saw him , he has improved much, he intends to enter colledge next term & means to be a very thorough scholar. Mrs C. Metcalf visited Almeda last ? . I wrote a letter to Uncle Joseph a month or two since, but we have heard nothing from Warwick for a long time, except by Mrs Russell in Oct. Henry Conant has a son. Hannah Stevens is engaged to a Mr. Parsons of Northfield. Jan 14th Rich Gale called up on Almeda to day & brought a letter from Aunt Conant & one from H. Stevens; Aunt C. is well & all the folks, Aunt C. is at Uncle Joseph's Uncle W's girls are all out of town, Esther is courted, Mary is not better, Grandmother R. is well; he brought a quit claim deed for us to sign. James, A. & the baby are well, she grows pretty every day; A. has lately taken a boarder (Graham), a young man who works with James, he does not lodge there now though. They talk of taking him, A. is very hearty. James sent merely an order to Bangor for that meal by the Capt. of a vessel about a fortnight since; has heard nothing. I am sorry Charles has so many trials & difficulties to struggle with [upside down in middle of letter] Mr. & Mrs. Child with all their wealths are not free from trouble; Henry does not do as his parents would like at all: he is out every night, particularly Sat. nights till late. carousing, drinking etc. he is apparently travelling the road to ruin speaking according the manner of the world as fast as he can; --unless he alters his course soon he will bring disgrace upon himself & his parents; he is in no business--this we have learned partly from Mrs. Langley and partly from other sources. Elisabeth is in good health, very fleshy and shapely in her form, but the same good simple girl. Aunt Humphrey staid a fortnight there, just called upon A. We do not call upon Mrs. Child very often. -- Mayo Heseltine is a wholesale merchant here. L. Richardson has returned to Winchendon, I believe to engage with Mr. Reed in his store. Caroline Chase has a fine daughter & is in pretty good health. Olive Metcalf is going to marry a widower with three children we have heard.
