to "call again" - Their imprecations upon my "infernal" head fell thick and fast - the sound died in the distance - I struck off into a unknown Indian path which led through the forest along the bank of the River & was soon (apparently) beyond the "haunts of men." I knew my course, & that I should strike the proper road in riding 12 miles. On my way I passed through a very large flock of young Turkies, (the old ones raised aloft) I jumped from my horse, determined on making some of them prisoners; I had undertaken a job equal to finding a "needle in the haymow" - I looked in vain - I made a journey of 36 miles this day, not stopping the whole distance - The country was uninteresting - no towns of consequence in my rout - the soil was either of the "barren" order, or very good alluvial soil - heavy timber.
