Monday July 30 3 of our party out prospecting others washing and taking Care of Stock about 3 oClock today I had just got through With Washing some things When I got up and walked about 2 Rods up the hill and Saw our horses laying down in the Valley I returned and got my dinner and in about 20 Minutes from the time first [?stated?] I again went up the hill to the horses were gone. I instantly gave chase following the valley and their tracks for about 3 Miles Where I lost it in a little forest of willows the valley led Straight up to Rocky Mountains about 6 Miles distant I ran back to give the Alarm and and our party followed to find the lost trail now about 5 ½ P.M. I finally found the trail up a steep hill followed by the Broad footsteps of a Man raising My gun on My Shoulder I followed on to the top of the hill and Was Surprized to find Myself in a beautiful park Surrounded on all sides by very thick pine [?] and Hundreds of old Indian Tent post pitched over it in all directions. I here lost the trail the grass was wild oat & Buffaloe having traveled about a Mile West in the park I found a Corner to the North that appeared like an Oppening Making for it I saw the horses standing in the corner heads towards me Seemingly Much frightened and was at that very time undoubtedly kept there by the Thief in Ambush altho I did not think of that then. I Sounded the finding to my friends below and on the other side that were making for the Mountains
