We Camped at Cotton Wood the feature of country the Same daily We are traveling on what is called here a Divide that is a ridge with hills Valley & Ravines rising from the flat top on each side and this arrangement is uniform the Whole of the Way excepting an occasional break through by Rivers & Creek We were visited today with a Small tornado of dust and Sand blowing dustily in our faces, and with Such force that it Started the blood from My bridle Hand in several places when we arrived in Camp We were all as black as the dirt of Kansas could make us. We laughed at each other about our different Complection the Roads were Swept as clean as a parlor floor it was impossible to See 10 feet before one and the animal refused to go on about dusk all was as Calm as if nothing had happened. 7 Thursday left this Whiskey Run, that is a pool of water on the prairie some twelve miles from any water except a few wells dug within about 10 Miles by Emigrant Settlers for their own [?] and not for Stock So we have to Make our Coffee &c of this water and thankful we are in Kansas to [?] water in any That Most of the Rivers & Creeks are perfectly dry not
