82 Süze - dear little girl - and my wife - but I shall soon be with them - pretty soon!" and he shut his eyes - Poor wretch! his haggard looks - knotted hair - his filthy swagger pose wild - unworthly eye - they sickened my heart and I turned away - Aye! and to morrow he will be dead.

Teusday January 1st 1850 Hail Teusday! thous first born of the new year. Thou dost usher upon the world another half century. Times aged brow axious another wrinkle - his pulsied limbs now bear another semi centenial load. I shall not live to see another half century's dawn - ere 1900 is chimed upon the midnight year. I shall lie moulding in my grave. Ah! is it not a consoling though - that we are immortal - that the body is not all - that "it is not all of death to die". Who otherwise could look with complacency on corruption - earth and worms. To coop the spirit in the grave were horrible. It is New Years day! and here am I in California. How different are my circumstance - my associations - from those of this day year. The scenes of Albany - of happy friends - of gala-day dressed citizens - of New Years calls - how vanished and in this place - comes Natoma - tents - mining - and miners. Life is but a bubble-floating in air - changing incessent - until dashed to earth. As in the States - for the few past years - so in California. New Year's day has proved rainy. My occupation for the day has been making a pair of canvass duck breeches - and sweetned buiscuit. What shall I be doing next New Years day? Last night was celebrated in Natoma by the advent of two balls. One at the Star Hotel - the other at Pool's. The six young women of the place was shared between them. Considering the scarcity of females - the Star having forestalled - Pool's fell through. Firing of guns - snapping of caps - signalized aboud the departure of the year. Excelsior's clerks outdid the crowd - by torching off this evening a box of five-crackers. Excelsior how hast thy glories departed since erst in Boston thou didst receive that banner - and with many a eloyment word didst promise to shout its moth on California's hills!
