65 Thursday November 29th 1849. The clouds have again vermosed. Yesterday was a sunny day - and this one as pleasant as the most melancholic man could desire. Wind northerly. how delightful this day was the common exclamation. Helped Williams chop down a huge tree. It fell contrary to our expectations. There was scampering. Called to see my patient a Mr Badger - suffering under a sever attack of Dysentry. This disease and the Chills and Fever are the prevailing complaints of this country. We mad a family Dinner Party - to day being - Thanksgiving Day as appointed by Gov. Riley. Why not we stray Californians honor this day with festivities as we were wont the good old day at home? To besure the Turkies could not be had - nor the [?]use - although had fortune favored a sirla goose might - have well represented its tame brother - nor the roast pig - nor chicken pie - with which we used to celebrate the day - nor yet have the hand of woman to give these luxuries - the benefit of her skill - yet even we did not despair of showing at least our good will. During all the morning our tent displayed active culinary preperations. The result was no mean display of [?]iands. Our guests were our neighbors the Paysons and Williams. Bill of Fare. Cold Roast Venison - with warm gravy - Cold Boiled Ham - Venison Stew with Potatoes of Mr Paused - Side Dishes. Salt - Pepper - Mustard and Vinegar. Hard Bread & Coffee. Desert: Peach Pie and Sweet Cake. Wines - Port and Madeira. We set forth our whole crockery - and went through is state with a regular system of courses. One would have been amused to behold our manners. Our California Thanksgiving - and yet it was no laughing matter to good apetites and good minds to enjoyment. We chatted - sung old wayside California Songs which sound quite out of place now - their finnes and great promis contrasting ridiculously with the reality as we have found it. Toasted Mr Francis wedding day which this is the anniversary - wishing him long years of joy and no more bairns - and broke up fully satisfied with the fact of having sun one good day in California.
