& as the streams approach the Eastern rim of the Hills they form unclear through masses of primary rock in canons deep narrow & exceedingly tortuous.

  From the great western summit the mountains on the east appear of great height. We have come down nearly 2500 feet to find ourselves at the foot of Harney's & other peaks which we supposed toward above the clouds & which turn out to be mere buttes of scarcely a thousand feet above the valleys.
