The grass was extremely poor & the landscape though beautifully framed & set out was poor & bald. The lovely glades of which Forsyth speaks were yet glades - but the scant green of the valley or gorge & the deeper green of the pine & spruce were the only variations of color - The "valley" soon came to a termination. By a very easy slope & a succession of graceful curves, the route passed from the ascending to a descending grade & almost imperceptibly we found ourselves going down - only a few hundred yards from the divide we came to a splendid spring the true head of Custer's "Castle" Creek
