and very kind to us. There is a large seminary built at the east end of the town it is a large well built and handsome building Rather large tho for the European population. The Episcopal church is also a handsome building and the tolling of the town clock and the solemn church bell reminded me at once of home and of every thing dear to Me. on the 20th of february was a great Mohometan festival. during it all Mohomendan houses were open for the poor and the Rich were obliged to keep a table of the best for them during it they run all Manner of risks of their lives thinking that if they are killed during the festival they are sure of heaven. There are several Mohomntan Mosques some of them are plain neat buildings others plain and filthy. The Hindoo temple is in the south part of the city and is not only a curious, but also neat one, it is not large but has many curious devices carved in the stone work. There is a large buffaloe on one side and a horse on the other both gilt from what I could understand from the priest the an interpreter. On the death of a Hindoo prince some years ago 15 of his wives were burned with him many of them imploring for mercy Many of their barbarous customs will never be done away with until they are educated. I think it would be better for our Missionaries to circulate amongst them their own holy books which teach Morality and virtue one god and every thing that our bible teaches and besides forbids the use of wine. Now if these people would only follow their own religion they would no doubt become a virtuous and enlightened nation but they do not know
