13th sailed from Nos Bay. Arrived in Zanzibar Novr 18th
I have been to the Rocky Mountains but such screeching and howling I never heard before. first said he these would come a howl then a scream and then a thousand other noises equally as horrible. And he finally concluded by saying he he [sic] had as cut his throat as to sleep one night ashore if I hadnt said then May I be billy be d....ned. This Morning I as usual sent the Steward to Market he could only find a few potatoes and two bottles of Milk this was the first milk we had drank in our coffee or any other way since leaving Rio and we blowed it out strong one Mid actually drank 6 cups and then called for more. After filling with wood and water for there was nothing else to be had except a few Madagascar buffaloes. We sailed Novr 13th after a quick and pleasant passage arrived at Zanzibar we boarded a Dow outside and sent a letter in to the American Consul to send us out a pilot but he did not receive the letter till we had gotten in. we stood in between the isles of Pemba and Zanzibar and without trouble anchored off the palace of the Sultan of Arabia (Mtong). Zanzibar is a low isle covered with verdure of all kinds and near the sea coast with tall forests of coco trees whilst in the interior are beautiful groves of orange and mangrove trees mixed with bannanas and a curious tho pretty kind of palm. The hills are very regular and beautiful and are almost entirely coverd [sic] with fields of cloves and spice mixed with waving fields of rice Maze and sugar cane, but this is not all, cattle run wild and fat thro the groves and seem to want neither care or attention wild dogs rove thro the grave-yards and along the sea beach. birds of prey hover over they [sic] towns serpents cross our path lizzards and scorpions crawl on every bush and under every rock are found Tarantulas and centipedes. in short every thing teems with life and Motion. in the evening the incessent
