I was last week around on the Vermont & Mass R.R. at Grouts and Northfield, next round on business, but stopped over Sunday to see the folks etc. I have an invite to go back there to Montague or rather to Greenfield, upon that Branch R. where I was last Winter which they have just raised money to complete, but I do not think I shall go, there is but a little bit of it, and I am justified in looking for a better situation than I could have there. There is at present more probability that I go upon that celebrated Mountain Route, Troy & Greenfield which they are just commencing, - into York State. I wish first to try to get upon a Road in Maine, if possible, to be nearer some.

 The journey to Brattleboro for you, if you do decide to go, which I hardly think you will, will be very easy for so long one, good Saloon cars where one can lie, smooth roads & good accommodations. the Roads East of Boston are roughest this winter; at least the Boston & Maine is very bad, where I went over it from Lawrence to Boston. There is hardly possibility of losing Baggage by present arrangements.  If properly delivered to Baggage Master, as it will be by porter or Hackman, distinct verbal direction of the town you are going to, the Baggage is bound to be delivered there in due course. To Brattleboro by Fitchburg & Vt. & Mass. R.R. 120 mls.
 I think I shall leave here, on account of the embarrassments of this company. They appear entirely unable to go on so as to give me enough to do & go ahead as I want to.
 I had letter from Mother of Jan. 1st. She was just going to Hampden. Chas & Albina lately visited there. Mother will enjoy herself there. So will you. Me too. Please write to me immediately
