The Congregational Church in this Newport is one of the very tallest sort of old fashioned, cost 10,000.00 finished highly. The Society has been very large & wealthy; lately by quarrells with their Minister is a little reduced. The Minister, Rev. John Woods is one of the real old fashioned sort, preached here nearly or quite 30 years. His sermons are an hour long regularly! Think if that in these days! Today he preached a funeral Sermon, they said an hour and a half long! I rather guess they stretched it a bit though. Just about the time folks got their nap fairly through & began to wake up, he had a terrible bout of drowsiness. It was awful long sermon. I never heard the like. He is though decidedly an able man, must have been quite so in his younger days. His sermons are well put together & really worth paying attention to if they are so long.
We leave Newport tomorrow probably. Hope to finish the survey in the week or soon after. Spend the week at Claremont I suspect, and then return to Goffstown or Manchester. Everett insists upon my going to Winsor to see his folks before I return, at any rate.
After this week direct to me at better perhaps at the "Oil Mill Village" which with the new Post Master is getting more convenient to Parkers. Why does not Mother write? Lucy too is by no means prompt. And Eliab, what shall I say of him. No word from him since I was at Bangor!
