Dear Joseph Grouts . Jan. 20th 1849

Yours of 3d,11th Inst. duly received I do not know about your castigation of that "old crazy trancendentalist". He may be not much more so than I am myself: at least, I see nothing so very terrible about it, unscriptural, or contrary to "Mudsills" though perhaps it might seem to be Mud heads.
What is Prof. Upham's definitions of the Ludicrous? I do not remember. Please also to bear in mind that I do not profess to have any one single particle of Metaphysics in my composition. If I had lived in the Middle Ages I should have been perfectly content to pass for a Fool. Therefore, I know nothing, and say nothing of Upham or Hobbes, or of Kant, Cousin, or Fechte. In fact I believe I have hardly got as far as Fechte's first directing to his diciples. I am hardly able to "think the Wall." Prof. Upham certainly has the reputation of being a great Metaphysician, is distinguished as such
Tell me all about your experience of mysteries etc. as to those matters discussed in connection with those extracts from Proverbial Philosophy.
Money Matters. The Last time I had any Money I thought to send you somewhat say $50. for safekeeping; but it then appeared probable that I might leave here soon etc. and other causes in my mind operating prevented. I have recently bought a Watch: Silver Lever Hunter's or Double Case. Cost some. I have paid Board & other
