Oct 31 to Nov 8 About the 25th of Oct. Last past, you appear to have had quite a serious attack of the so called -- Blues! Miserable, frightful devils I expect they are. Am not subject to them myself. I was thinking while reading yours to give you a serious lecture upon these Blue Devils But now you have got over it I suppose the very best dose you could have would be copy of your effusions at that time, "in terrorism." But seriously Joseph I believe it to be, not only perfectly needless, but absolutely wrong to give way to, or even to harbour at all such feelings, To be sure, you have trials troubles, vexations; disappointments, discouragement &c. &c. So have all. You may have a large share. Tis no reason for Blues If we were to make a general rule, it would be found that he who has the most of all these evils is the happy man in this life: far oftener at any rate than the contrary. After all all these feelings, Blues &c. commonly have a physical rather than a mental or a moral origin. You have had too much labor, care & anxiety. too little recreation, of mind or body. Therein you have done wrong; no matter if circumstances did seem to require it. It was wrong. Contrary to the Laws, natural laws so called, of Him who created & nobly endowed mind & body. These laws broken bring penalties. you have mixed too little in Society, Society -- the Society of the intelligent 7 good of the other sex, is perhaps the best recreation of mind. The bow must not be always bent. I can study more in a year in 10 hours per diem than in 18. You or any body else can do more & better for some recreation. Duty -, Duty to yourself, to friends, to Creator, requires it. I advise you as a brother, to get acquainted more, & with Females, too. they are not all so much inferior or unworthy of acquaintance as you may imagine. Make up your mind also to get married
