Dear Brother Yours of the 19th inst. dated at Bowd. Coll. came to my hands this morning. Several items and matters of fact therein contained, being noticed, I deem worthy of recurrence, and having this evening finished my day's work early; 'it is hardly yet nine by the clock'; I consider the occasion favorable for scribbling a few words of reply, while my mind is thereunto attracted. Your letter is dated Bowd. Coll. Very well for the occasion; though erroneous in point of fact, "Berry's" not being within the College Yard. I am glad to hear you have been at Brunswick. It is always pleasant to have ones relatives & friends see the places we have seen: There is one more idea in common. Strictures upon King Chapel & Brunswick Church. Your Criticism showing your habits of thought, and the circumstances under which your taste is formed. Your taste is undoubtedly a good one, severe, correct, and all that, as far as your own sphere is concerned. But upon College Chapels or even upon churches you get beyond it! I should agree with you on the proportions of those buildings if designed for a Town Hall, an Exchange, or even a Court House. Mr. Upjohn is undoubtedly at least one of the first Architects in the U.S. Those buildings, both designed by him certainly do him credit. They are not Doric, that would be fit for
