have its corresponding depth of degradation and punishment, when it violates its high responsibilities, and employ its mighty powers & influences in giving allowance to the evil and the bad of that humanity which it is its "Mission" to elevate and purify. What is the guilt of Napoleon, of Jereboam the son of Nebat, of Voltaire, of Byron, of Bentham? Or rather, compared with theirs, what is the guilt of the very worst this world has ever seen of that class. "Who never had a dozen thoughts in all their lives," Which shall be beaten with the most stripes.
As to your 'objections" to my view of "Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed". 1st I do not take the passage out of its connection. It is its connection, not only the context, but the whole connection, the time, the place, the circumstances, the motives, the objects, the effects, it is this, it is all this, and all these, which convinces me that the passage can have no other rendering or meaning. 2. I deny that the language is dubious -- in the original -- or even in this version of it, which could not be improved. 3. There is a slight difference between "Whoso sheddeth etc." and "Multiply & replenish etc." "Whoso" is individual, particular, definite, pointed (could not be clothed in language more so. "Whoso" do eth so, shall be punished so.
The other is General, universal, but not particular. In its true sense, it is undoubtedly a command, and as absolutely binding upon the human race as any other. A nation or a people refusing it entirely; doing like the "Areoi" of the Pacific, would perhaps probably be as guilty as a Nation of idolaters, of pirates, or of Murderers. It is one command, not to be sure the only one, wherein, the Antichrist, Mother of Abominations, has, in part, at least, let herself against the will of the Highest.
What were Prof. Goodwin's great arguments? and what were his "Chips and Cobble Stones". I believe I never heard Prof. Goodwin mention Cap. Pun. I have Rex Woods though & Prof. Upham , I did not call your "dust", argument.; Still it is worth minding.
