Dearest Ettie

I believe I promised to write sometime. This is my first stop.

In haste now. Unpleasant time aboard Bangor Boat Awful Crowd; about the worst looking set of 'humans' I ever fell among. About half of them - yes, 9/10 I should think were simply going up to Boston for a drink of Whiskey. No state rooms either; so one is necessarily in the crowd. When you go, go any way but on a Boston Boat without securing at least a good state room long beforehand -And then carry yr own provisions without there is improvement since I was there. There was hardly room seen to stand up any where on the boat. Arrived at Boston near Nine A.M. Here to night tired & dirty: but in good health & spirits. Take care of my Ettie & Baby. Most affectionately
