You must have had a very pleasant visit among your friends in Mass. I wish I could have met you in Boston. I am glad you visited Mt. Auburn. It is indeed a lovely place. It is several years since I have been there much; but I have enjoyed it much. In fact I almost always visit the cemeteries in every new place I visit, and usually enjoy it much; especially if a beautiful one like Mt. Auburn. Do you remember the piece in Proverbial Philosophy upon Death. I am fond of that. Lockport Ill. where you stopped, I did not really see, as we passed there on the Canal by night. It is called a very flourishing place now. The North part of Illinois, and especially the region about the Canal is increasing in population, wealth, and prosperity very rapidly indeed. It is very different now from this South Part. The North has a large proportion of New England Men, and much enterprise. The South however is coming, and is to come forward very rapidly now. It is easy to see a 'transition state" now in everything.
