This letter is small, but page torn, smighty? Bangor Maine May 12th 1839 Dear Folks, and Mother

                                                           I have not much to write, but as you said I must have a letter wrote all of the time beforehand; I can fix you to write if no more.

The ("stump hole") was ploughed last Wednesday P.M. with 2 horses and 2 men besides Mr. W. and myself! We have not commenced opperations upon it yet though. Mrs. W. cultivates this year a day bed in the shape of a garden 2 doors off from here. I was ploughed a little, wed: but it is baked down miserable. I have to dig it up with a shovel; mix it in manure eten it is rather hard work. I have enough to do all of the time, out of School: more than pay for my board I guess rather I work 4 or 5 hours per diem, none at noon though. I have wrote a letter to Ann, put it in the P.O. yesterday. When did you get my last letter and who brought it? I left it at Chase et. Henrys inn I am getting along some in my studies, about through 2 book of Aeneid. 40 to 60 lines per day. Have not had to speak or write yet being new scholars shall soon though. Last Friday school did not keep, but the scholars got some trees and set out in the yard. I did not go for trees but remained to work in the yard, digging holes etc. The City Council furnished Last Mon. Judges ? Cory? page torn and his wife Mrs. Worcester, Augusta, visiting, so there is a house full, now most. Mrs. W.'s regular girl went away sick April 21st since then I have had to milk. There was a little girl came and staid for 4 days and was homesick and Mrs. W. has done without a anyone till last week, when Delia came. Mr. Tenney my S.S, teacher has left the school, gone to preaching up to the Corporation. last sabbath a stranger to day no teacher. Mr. Hatch has gone out of town, Vacation I dont know but it would have been well for Joseph to have left his cap here as he offered to; Hat, are not so much worn now as they used to be I guess; There is not a single one goes to the school. I have worn the Tarpawlin as yet mostly, but it will be to warm by and by, I guess I can get along if I have a Palm leaf. If I could have some kind of a green baise or white cotton or linen Jacket or frock to wear to school it would be an excellent plan, Save my Coat of which there is need as I have nothing else to wear to Church.

 The Brown Cloth is miserable stuff, always awful dirty. I have worn the Drab pants most of the time but they look neat and clean- the others are dirty, It has been very Smoky here for several days, hardly see the sun. Hant there been some cold at Milo lately, my fingers were cold mornings summat
