Friday October 8, 1897 cloudy. a.m. cleaned out corn house, shelled. p.m. took 3 bus. corn & 3 bus. oats to mill ground together. paid for grinding . 30 took 2 bus. pears and 1/2 bus. tomatoes $1.30 went to wood lot and hauled load of wood. eve. last performance Luther entertainment. night warm. Sat. 9. a.m. Eli & I sawed wood in grove kids pick up apples. Eli & Marion to Oberlin on noon train. p.m. to hill lot w. Ike Keyes & Nelson pick beans Marion, Eli, Jo & Dale McFarland of Des Moines walk from Oberlin. Ike & Keyes walk out to meet them. Sunday 10. Not to Ch. S.S. Lake Ave. w. Fred Reeve. House to house canvas arranged for. Down to L.A. again in eve. with crowd. to C.E. Missing mtg led by Fern Smith. Mon 11. warm. Bessie Rich here at 5:30 a.m. to tell us wood lot on fire. Jo. Ike & I went up. All the neighbors were in [in margin] Woods lot on fire there fighting fire & had it under control. Geo. hauled 2 tanks of water from river. Jo. home & went to Oberlin at noon. Everything was so dry the fire burned down into the ground. Many trees burned down. About 5 p.m. it rained [in margin] rain hard and later in night rained again Ralph Kuchenritter is said to have set fire Sunday
