from Mary - and Perry seems to have lost his voice - I suppose his Commencement Oration takes his time. Oh, Perry, Get there. "The gems of literature are all less than 4 minutes long" Prof Frest? maintains. To the All There Nat Hist. Society I would say there are no Jackrabbits here but the fields seem to be full of rabbits. They are very tame too. I have seen half a dozen in a group together sit by a hedge at the roadside and watch a team drive by without winking. The quails keep up a continual Bob-White and often let you come within 10 ft of them. They are thick and tame. I often see birds and flowers. I don't know, but I can't stop to look at them.
I usually breakfast at 6, sometimes when I stay over night with a farmer I get routed out at about 5 - I stayed overnight with a man named Totten only 4 or 5 miles from Monticello - His wife was a very nice, sweet faced little bit of a woman and they had 4 boys smart keen eyed clean looking, oldest about 16 and youngest about 5 y. They were jolly. I had so much fun with them it almost made me homesick to see my own big and little brothers. They had a big strawberry short kake (along) with so many berries in it you could hardly find the short kake and rich. Oh and apple butter and peach butter and preserved pears &c. Some of these farmers live well or else they throw on lots of style when they have company. The little Totten kid had a ha-ha-ha laugh on him that he nearly killed me. He goes to school with his brothers. He was so lonesome alone they had to let him go.
